A metaphor with the disclaimer built in
Read this before you price the name. The category only works if the next owner keeps the boundary sharp.
AI Cognition Disorder is a name for two problems that keep being discussed as if they were unrelated. Large language models still fail tasks that look, on a score sheet, like mild cognitive impairment. People who lean on those models for recall, drafting, and judgment can accumulate a debt of their own: less stamina for unaided work, less ownership of the paragraph, more fog at the end of the day.
It is not a formal diagnosis. There is no billing code, no patient, and no claim that a model has a brain. The metaphor is borrowed from neurology and cognitive science because those fields already have language for fluency without control, and for confident gap-filling. The domain exists so that language has a serious address.
Where models look impaired
Batteries adapted from human screening — clock drawing, cube copying, trail making, set shifting, delayed recall — show a consistent shape. Next-token systems are often fluent and still brittle when the task needs a spatial model, a plan that survives a distraction, or a memory that is not just the last thing said.
- Visuospatial construction is a weak spot. The description of a clock is not a clock.
- Executive sequences break, then get narrated as success.
- Delayed recall and abstraction are filled in. The clinical word for confident filling-in is confabulation. The engineering word is a sample.
Where people take on debt
Cognitive debt is what happens when too much reading, synthesis, and first-draft thinking is handed off. The early signs are ordinary and worth taking seriously without turning them into a syndrome: decision fatigue, a lower tolerance for a hard page, students who can submit a polished answer and not reconstruct it an hour later.
- Core skills — critical reading, argument, unaided recall — get less practice.
- Professionals describe mental fog after a day of assisted production.
- For children, the open question is developmental: attention and metacognition need years of unaided reps.
Hallucination is the shared surface
A hallucinated citation feels like knowledge. Retrieval, monitoring, and refusal policies lower the rate. They do not retire the failure. A buyer who publishes under this name should expect to say that in the first screen, every time: fluent is not the same as checked.
What the name is for
Architectures with a real executive layer. Courses that grade the thinking. Clinical education that treats the assistant as a scribe with a known defect. Policy that can say cognitive debt without borrowing the panic of a diagnosis. The phrase is the category. The .com is the front door.
